Overview

The Ready Steady Store in Doncaster is a busy self storage facility that serves a wide range of customers, from individuals needing extra space to small businesses storing equipment and inventory. The building’s exterior plays an important role in brand visibility and creating a positive impression for customers. Over time, exposure to weather had caused the purple perimeter band to lose its vibrancy, appearing patchy and inconsistent in areas.

Our goal was to completely restore this feature, ensuring that the colour matched perfectly across the entire building and that the finish was durable enough to withstand the region’s challenging weather conditions.

Approach

We implemented a structured, technical refurbishment strategy designed to restore the facility’s visual impact while accommodating the operational needs of a live site.

Technical Specification: We selected a specialist high-performance exterior coating system engineered for superior colour retention and UV stability. This ensured the signature ‘Ready Steady Store’ purple was chemically matched to the original brand guidelines.

Surface Preparation: To guarantee long-term adhesion, we executed a rigorous preparation phase, including surface abrasion, cleaning, and the precise masking of adjacent substrates to prevent overspray.

Dynamic Scheduling: recognising the volatility of the weather, we adopted a flexible application schedule, mobilizing teams during specific meteorological windows to ensure optimal curing conditions and a flawless finish.

Challenges

The project required the management of significant environmental and logistical constraints to deliver a defect-free handover.

Adverse Weather Conditions: The project was delivered during a period of severe weather in Doncaster, including high winds, rain, and snow. This required constant monitoring of dew points and substrate temperatures to ensure the coating application remained compliant with technical data sheets.

Live Operational Environment: As a high-footfall self-storage facility, maintaining 24/7 customer access was critical. We established strict exclusion zones and safety corridors to segregate works from the public, ensuring zero disruption to the client’s daily revenue stream.

Substrate Degradation: The existing purple band suffered from inconsistent fading and patchiness. Achieving a uniform, monolithic finish over a variable base required expert application techniques to prevent “grinning” (background colour showing through).
