Overview

The Toyota showroom in Letchworth required a comprehensive facade modernisation to align with the manufacturer’s current corporate identity. The existing brown curtain walling system had suffered from UV degradation, resulting in fading and peeling that compromised the facility’s premium aesthetic. The objective was to execute a complete colour transformation to Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016), restoring the building’s visual impact without the prohibitive cost of re-glazing.

Approach

We implemented a hybrid application strategy to address both the scale of the exterior and the sensitivity of the interior.

Hybrid Application: Exterior elements—including the curtain walling, steel columns, and main canopy—were restored using high-performance spray techniques to achieve a factory-smooth finish. Internally, we utilized a precision hand-painting methodology to eliminate the risk of atomised paint mist affecting the showroom environment.

Intricate Preparation: The project required a rigorous masking protocol. Approximately 180 individual glazing units were masked internally and externally to protect the glass and ensure razor-sharp coating lines.

Substrate Restoration: All frameworks were mechanically prepared to remove flaking paint and contaminants, followed by a specialist primer to ensure long-term adhesion of the new topcoat.

Challenges

Live Retail Environment: The showroom remained fully operational throughout the refurbishment. Our works had to be executed with zero disruption to vehicle sales or the customer experience, requiring immaculate housekeeping and noise management.

Internal Logistics: Working inside a stocked car showroom demanded surgical precision. The decision to hand-paint internal frames was a strategic choice to guarantee zero overspray on high-value vehicles or interior finishes.

Meteorological Constraints: As with all exterior spraying, moisture control was critical. We dynamically scheduled external works around weather forecasts to prevent delays and ensure optimal curing conditions.

Result

The transformation was immediate and effective. The switch to Anthracite Grey successfully modernised the asset, bringing it into strict alignment with Toyota’s global branding standards. By combining electrostatic-grade spraying with detailed hand application, we delivered a snag-free, uniform finish across the entire building envelope. Crucially, this was achieved while the business continued to trade, proving that high-end refurbishment can be delivered without operational downtime.
